Product Details

Black Girl Sunscreen was made for people of colour (or anyone who doesn't want their sunscreen to leave a white cast). Make It Hybrid™ is both a mineral and chemical sunscreen that is designed to blend beautifully into darker skin tones. It's the best of both worlds!

Like all of Black Girl Sunscreen's products, Make It Hybrid is clean, vegan and cruelty free. The formula is infused with natural ingredients such as aloe and shea butter for a moisturizing feel. Best of all, it offers broadspectrum SPF50 protection, and is free from Oxybenzone and Octinoxate. No need to worry about toxic chemicals disrupting your hormones.

WHO NEEDS THIS?

Anyone who wants a hyrbid formula! We personally wouldn't use it on deep skin tones, finding that it leaves a more noticeable cast on shades darker than Fitzpatrick V. For deep tones, the OG Black Girl Sunscreen is best.

HOW DO I USE IT?

Just be aware that Make It Hybrid is a liquid formula - so don't squeeze the tube too hard or a lot of product will come out! Best to open with the lid facing up before applying to your palm.

Because this contains zinc oxide, apply on dry skin and take your time blending on dark skin, massaging until it completely disappears. Re-application with the hybrid formula may require more blending.

The best practice is to apply 30 minutes before going outside to allow the chemical UV filters to bind to your skin. Re-apply every two hours of exposure and immediately after swimming or excessive sweating. Even when it's cloudy, up to 80% of the sun's UV radiation still reaches the earth. For more information, see 's information on sunscreen .

Remember:
If you are unsure about a possible sensitivity to a product, always do a patch test before use or consult your healthcare professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Black Girl Sunscreen any good?

Black Girl Sunscreen is incredible. It is absolutely invisible, sinks into the skin fast, doesn't irritate and leaves a healthy sheen. It's clean, vegan, cruelty-free and made with non-toxic ingredients. It's a favourite of the Kanvas Beauty staff! Make It Hybrid requires more blending due to the presence of zinc oxide, but also works on dark skin.

What sunscreen is best for black skin?

It comes down to a matter of personal preference, but Black Girl Sunscreen was made for people of colour by a person of colour (Shontay Lundy). We love to support amazing black-owned businesses like this one.

Is Black Girl Sunscreen different?

What makes Black Girl Sunscreen different (as in, different good) is that it actually enhances your skin. Sometimes we look at SPF protection like a necessary evil - but it can make our face look too greasy, or leave a white cast, or worse, can make us break out. But Black Girl Sunscreen boasts one of the cleanest formulas on the market, and actually makes your skin glow. It can also be used on its own as moisturizer!

What SPF should black people use?

Black Girl Sunscreen's comes in with an SPF30, which allows only 3% of UVB rays to reach your skin. This is adequate for all skin types, along with frequent reapplication. You can also use an SPF50 (i.e. BGS Kids or Make It Hybrid), but that only dials up the protection level by 1%, allowing 2% of UVB rays to reach your skin.

Can I use Black Girl Sunscreen as a moisturizer?

You certainly can use Black Girl Sunscreen as a moisturizer. Nourishing avocado and jojoba oils hydrate the skin and leave it looking dewy and healthy. If you have oily skin, this is what we'd recommend. However if your skin is on the dry side, combining it with a moisturizer will be better for you.
